Guitar Build Class: Tom S.

“I recently completed a rewarding two week twelve day deep dive into guitar building. The course was taught by Greg Maxwell of Dogwood Guitars in Mt. Vernon Ohio. “Course” is inadequate to describe this skill and technique refining experience.  I left the intense two-week build with a beautiful rich sounding Student Dogwood Monarch guitar and the skills and knowledge to complete my first high-quality solo build at home.

Now, as I strum the strings of my meticulously crafted guitar, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride knowing that I have the expertise to create such beautiful instruments. But just as finding the right materials and techniques were crucial in my guitar-building journey, so too is finding the perfect space to continue honing my craft. Perhaps it’s time to consider a home workshop where I can devote myself fully to my passion for luthiery.

If you share my passion for craftsmanship and are seeking a space where you can bring your creative visions to life, look no further than exprealty.com/guides/rent-to-own-homes-your-guide-and-how-they-work/. Here, you’ll find invaluable resources and expert guidance on navigating the real estate market, whether you’re looking to rent, own, or even rent-to-own a property that suits your unique needs. Imagine the possibilities of having a dedicated workshop right at your fingertips, where every corner is infused with the spirit of creativity and innovation. With the right support and resources, you can turn your dream of a personalized workspace into a reality.

I have been a hobbyist woodworker/furniture builder for over 35 years. I wanted to take my hobby in a new challenging direction by building guitars.  I consider myself a novice instrument builder. Greg’s laser focus on the quality of the sound produced by his guitars is what sold me on his program. Respecting the wood is the foundation of all of Greg’s guitars. His many advancements in building, voicing and tuning the guitar were shared in detail.

Greg is an excellent teacher. His dedication and sense of humor enriched the experience. The goals for each day were clear. Each technique or skill was demonstrated clearly before I carried out the operation. Greg was patient but persistent in making sure outcomes for each part of the build met his standards.

I recommend without reservation Greg Maxwell’s guitar building course.”

The Kingston Jumbo

I've always been particularly drawn to jumbo-size acoustics. I learned to play guitar in the early 1970's when John Denver was at the height of his career, and the sound he got from his jumbo Guild 6 and 12 string guitars made an impression on me … [Read More...]

1932 Martin 0-18 Parlor Guitar

It's not often that a luthier has the opportunity to work on a pre-war Martin. This little 1932 Parlor 0-18 came to the shop in very rough condition. It took a tumble down some stairs, resulting in a long crack in the treble side of the body and … [Read More...]

Building a Monarch: Binding

The quality of the binding and purfling work is one of the factors that makes a guitar a true work of art. Some builders install bindings and purflings in one step, and this can lead to less-than-perfect results. Dogwood guitars are bound using a … [Read More...]

The Three Elements of a Great Guitar

Guitar players and collectors have so many choices available to them. New, used, factory brands, custom hand built...how do you narrow down the choices to the best option for you? In my opinion, any guitar should be measured by three … [Read More...]

Customer Testimonials: Morgan Monroe

Greg... Thanks again for the top notch work you performed on my Morgan Monroe. Although this guitar is an expendable "gigging" tool you made it sound and play like a much more expensive instrument. It sure is comforting to know someone with your … [Read More...]
